REMONDIS has had a 49% share in AWISTA GmbH since 2006. The remaining shares are owned by the Düsseldorf utilities company, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf AG. Thanks to this very strategic partnership, the PPP company has, over the years, been able to further strengthen its existing resources, enter into new fields of activities and make an even greater contribution towards protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
One of AWISTA’s biggest responsibilities is to ensure Düsseldorf always leaves a good impression by keeping it clean. An important task – as the town, which is also the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is not only home to almost 640,000 people but also welcomes five million visitors every year. The company delivers a variety of professional road-sweeping services (keeping the streets free of leaves in the autumn, cleared of ice and snow in the winter and, of course, generally clean all year round) so that the sparkle returns to the city no matter which special occasion it may just have hosted: a carnival parade, New Year’s Eve party or one of its many sporting or cultural events. Other important tasks include the kerbside collection of residual waste, organic waste and old paper, the collection and recycling of bulky waste and collecting and handling hazardous materials.
AWISTA’s infrastructure includes composting and sorting plants as well as facilities for recycling construction and demolition waste in Düsseldorf and Mettmann.
Furthermore, AWISTA runs all of the household recycling centres in the city, delivers the residual waste and road sweepings it has collected to the waste incineration plant (WIP) owned by Stadtwerke Düsseldorf and ensures the WIP is able to run to capacity by supplying it with non-recyclable waste for thermal treatment. Last but not least, the company’s portfolio also includes the AWISTA garage, which carries out around 12,000 assignments a year on the city’s municipal vehicles, primarily to service or repair them. Besides Düsseldorf, AWISTA and its subsidiary, AWISTA Logistik, also serve a number of other district and city authorities including the district of Mettmann and the towns of Remscheid and Solingen.
Thanks to AWISTA’s collaboration with a group of specialist companies, it is able to offer a robust and wide range of services that not only benefit the local authorities and their inhabitants but its private and business customers as well. This infrastructure includes a number of composting and sorting plants as well as facilities for recycling construction and demolition waste in Düsseldorf and Mettmann. This close cooperation work between the firms makes it possible for just one company to deliver a huge range of services. Half of AWISTA’s turnover currently comes from its commercial activities.
AWISTA’s focus is not only on supplying top quality services but also on systematically fulfilling its environmental and social responsibilities across all areas of its business. Thanks to its smart collection logistics and regional recycling facilities, the company has been helping to protect the environment and curb climate change for many years now. By ensuring that the one million tonnes of residual materials it collects are processed sustainably, AWISTA succeeds in cutting carbon emissions by more than 214,000 tonnes every year.
